That first tank is an interesting one in that it has a high velocity tank-killer tube on it. As configured, it would have been something to worry about on the battlefield. Not so much, the second tank with it's low velocity .75.
That first pic was taken in Jan 1945 in Alsace, France (just outside the Rhine). Supposedly the sandbag armor would protect the tank against panzerfaust and HV 88s, but that seems like thinking a leather biker jacket will stop .45s.

Wouldn't the sandbags work as a rudimentary standoff armor and cause premature detonation of the incoming round?
