The biggest case of discrimination regarding marriage is discrimination against the unmarried. I could go for getting the gummint out of the process if they and everyone else would/were required to get completely out of the process - no more tax breaks for marrieds, no health insurance discounts for "and family", no reduced auto insurance rates for married people, etc. Make a person a person with each one having exactly the same liabilities and privileges - no special treatment for anyone, period - and be done with it.

I would agree with all except auto insurance rates. Rates are supposed to be based on probability of risk - married = less risk = less cost.
I also advocate airlines charging passengers by the pound, as opposed to per person.

That would be a great policy as far as the gov't goes... but I'm for insurance doing whatever they want based on actuarial principles, astral charts, or anything or anything else.

This. Same goes for the Childfree. I pay taxes for a school I will never use.

on some level, that is a valid, but educating society (such as it is) does still benefit you as a member of society in a way that tax breaks for married couples do not.

But yes, one reason i support same sex marriage is that civil unions and other state-by-state laws did not carry the same weight because of things like tax breaks, visitation and end of life decisions and many other ways that 'marriage' has been codified into law

Here, but occasionally There.
If there's one conservative I'll advocate for, it's the devil.

Anyone that lived through the Cold War knows that communism/socialism is the economic/political system of the devil.

And, going beyond JamesP82's comment, are you stating that it is the conservatives that have advocated the killing of roughly 55 million unborn babies via abortion?

Sorry, Ridge. You're just showing your "troll" colors. (Or at least, I hope that's all you are doing.)

And some argue that having a healthier society does still benefit you as a member of society. At least that's the argument I've seen for universal healthcare.

That's the arrogant collectivist attitude in action. they know exactly what you should consider to be "good," and are of course willing to use any amount of force to compel you if you happen to hold different values. They completely reject the notion of an individual deciding his own values for himself, and deciding what the "greatest good" is for himself. Those are things that are to be dictated to you by the collective. It doesn't matter if you don't personally think something is a benefit to you and wouldn't choose to pay for it voluntarily -- they know better.

I'd say it's responsible adults choosing not to bear a child they can't financially and/or emotionally care for behind abortion, but that's for another day.

At least the married queers can maybe one day adopt some of the accidental/ unwanted crotch fruit this state so frequently lets ripen into the leeches the fiscally conservative love to bemoan.

Besides, as doctorjj Condeleeza Rice taught us, the best way to right such a moral wrong is not through legislation. Like segregation would have ended on its own without the CRA...abortion would disappear on its own without government bans and tight regulations if it's really a moral wrong. Government is not the answer, remember?

That's how society works - we dictate, enforce and punish those who act upon values that are different from society's: murderers, rapists, thieves, tax evaders, wife-beaters, child-abusers etc get hunted down, restrained and punished.

If you don't like it - change the society values through a due process, or find a society that lines up with your values.
