If I ever get attacked by bags of water I'll choose the Fed HST or Ranger SXT

A buddy of mine is a Seminole County deputy and he shot a BG in the throat with a 185gr Gold Dot. The BG got out of prison a few years ago. He says he'll never shoot Gold Dots again. He wrote letters to Speer and several other instructors who praised Gold Dots. He got some responses from some big names. Sheriff Jim Wilson was one of them.

I have only carried a .45 ACP occasionally since my Army days so I'm certainly no expert on modern ammo for one. I keep a .45 ACP revolver as a house gun and have a 1911 as a range gun. The 1911 has only seen 230gr ball but I have 200gr GDHP+P in my S&W. The GDHP, while not necesarily the best, is a proven load. I have never been a fan of a bullet less than 230gr in a .45 Auto. Not knowing the exact details of the BG shot in the throat I doubt that anything of substance was hit. If so, he probably would have not gone to prison (or anywhere else.) Moving on to some Oliver North style "war stories" I have seen several BGs (although they probably were a little smaller) DRT with .45 ACP ball ammo. In 1967 I even saw one hit in the throat (neckbone). There wasn't much left holding his head on. I don't think I would discount GDHP ammo for this one instance. There appears to be quite a lot of good .45 ACP ammo out there.

Ok...stupid question time. :rolleyes2

I found some Winchester 230gr SXTs for $39.95 box of 50. But it's "+P" ammo. Earlier a couple of posters said no to "+P" ammo.

Why is "+P" such a "good" thing in short barreled revolvers, but not a good thing in an auto with a 4.25" snout?

Is it because of the two and a half inches of extra barrel? Wouldn't "+P" be awesome in a caliber that is subsonic anyway, regardless of barrel length? :anyone:

Takes the average speed from around 850 fps up to about 1130 to 1150 fps (in a 5" barrel)

I carry +P in my short 3" Kimber. I like it. The only disadvantage I can think of for some, may be recoil.
