I have nice toys, and I'll bet most of you guys could probably out shoot me. I really don't care. I am good enough to blow the brains out of zombies though.
I really don't see the point in pointing out that he has expensive stuff, yet lacks a bit of skill in marksmanship. It's not like he was being a douche about it. If he was blabbing at the range about how bad@$$ his expensive stuff is and how it makes him a better operator than everyone, when clearly he's a n00b.... then yes I can see the need to point out that he's a noob and point it out to everyone.
If he just kept to himself, then more power to him. Atleast he's there at the range trying to improve his skill. If he has the money to start with tier 1 stuff instead of a delton or dpms rifle, even better.
This is like making fun of a guy because his first girlfriend happens to be a gorgeous model who is hot enough to be a victoria secret angel. I mean come on! A girl that hot is not going to make up for the fact that he may not be the world's most experienced lover, right? A new guy like him should start down with the swamp donkeys and scallywags over at Baker St. Cafe or at City Walk and work his way up.
Maybe he does not feel right in asking for help with something. I see it everyday at work a woman asks if she can have help with something, walk over there and 9 out of 10 times there is her husband/boyfriend standing who will not ask for help or advice cause he is afriad that he will look stupid, I see it everyday. I handle those customers differantly than I do others, have to go about asking questons in a completely differant manner than te contractors I normally work with.
Sounds like the guy has some good gear, how about intoducing yourself, see what happens from there, if the guy wants to be left alone, he will tell you so, I would.
You would be surprised how many people out there that trot down to sportsworld,bp or academy with daddy's super platinum mega card and get totally outfitted to go shooting/hunting with the finest money can buy.
irregardless of the fact they have never been hunting/shooting before.
everybody's situation is different. I go to the range and feel embarassed by my $350 ar, when shooting next to a guy whose ar handguard cost more than my whole rifle. I also kinda feel bad for the guy on the otherside of me that looks at my gun and wishes he could afford one some day.
As a returning "old"(65) new shooter. Sometimes we're not sure of how to open with the right questions to ask those around us. The AR format is vastly different than I remember it.
Baker - I understand your observation. I've seen similar stuff before and thought the same thing. Good thing is - if the guy keeps his toys a few years and figures out he's not really interested he might sell it all to one of us for a fraction of its value.
Or sell it for twice its original price, which is why he got rich in the first place.
I Really see No problem either, BUT on the other hand, the shooters with this equipment that feel they have to express how BadA** they are for just having "said" equipment and then continuing to talk about it all afternoon while shooting Not So Much. Just Sayin...... U know, the ones with 18 rails covered with lights and lasers that dont even care to know where the "paper" is, and if they are hitting it or not???
