I saw this guy at the range the other day ...

As a returning "old"(65) new shooter. Sometimes we're not sure of how to open with the right questions to ask those around us. The AR format is vastly different than I remember it.

Just ask, and if you aren't comfortable with that, there are many members of this forum that would be happy to meet you at the range and share their knowledge.

So a guy with nice gear was at a range, minding his own business, working on his shooting skills....damn, what is this world coming to?

Everything is relative right? An expensive rifle to one guy is only a couple day's pay for another. Why should a guy buy cheap gear when he can afford better? Who's to say the guy had no training or didn't plan on some? Maybe he was enrolled in a course and was trying to learn his gear a little before hand.

I'm glad people are buying nice gear and getting out to the range.

It looked pretty obvious he was unfamiliar with firearms in general, and his AR-10-type in particular. He didn't seem the conversational type, so I mostly left him alone. He managed to keep most of his shots on paper at 100y, with effort, with a scope.

Next time I see him, he is shooting no better, but with a Zeiss scope/laser rangefinder combo. I happened to notice what rifle he is shooting: Knights Armament SR-25! Probably the most expensive lesson in "equipment does not equal skill" you could get!

The fella has some expendable cash and a desire to shoot, don't make fun him. Instead, next time you see him, why not go over and strike up an intelligent conversation an offer some assistance?

Another perspective. This may not be a new enthusiast who simply invested large right out of the gate. This may be a man frightened by the times or someone who has suddenly realized his need to defend his family. He may have made a big (although somewhat unnecessary) purchase for all the right reasons. I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt.

There are many explanations one good one pointed out by EdmondMember.

Here's another. Was the guy older? I ask because I'm almost 60 and the one thing I've noticed over the years is my ability to shoot well is degrading as I have aged. I am less steady, weaker upper body and arms, eye sight is worse. No matter how much I practice the fundamentals some things just can't be overcome.

Who knows, the guy in the OP's post may have had sniper quality skills at one time but his age is catching up with him.

so a couple of things
1. everyone (yes i do mean everyone) is an "idiot" or "unskilled" at most things, it is scientifically proven, everyone only has so many neurological pathways that they can "enhance" into strengths. You may be some type of expert when it comes to guns, but what would happen if you went to a gym? what about doing taxes? what about playing a musical instrument? what about medical? what about theology?, etc... you get my point basically i have completely backed off of taking an arrogant approach (which i was guilty of in the past, no question) because if some people heard the questions i have about computers they would laugh and call me a noob, along with about 100 other subjects i am ignorant about.
2. why are people even checking other people out at the range, much less seeing how accurate they are not just in one visit, but in multiple visits with various equipment, unless someone is sweeping me or being unsafe there is really no reason to be checking out how accurate they are unless you want to feel superior...
3. the jealously/envy of what other people do with their money is getting out of hand (i used to be the same way, i used to rail on other people about this) why is it our "frame of reference" is always the right one? if we spend 30,000 on a car it is a good purchase, but people that spend 60,000 are wasteful, but at the same time people that spend 15,000 aren't allowed to think we are wasteful for 30,000 on a car!! what do you think the rest of the world thinks about us (i mean just look at the 1st world problem posters) when Every day, almost 16,000 children die from hunger-related causes. That's one child every five seconds. There were 1.4 billion people in extreme poverty in 2005. so how in the world can we feel like we spend our money "better" than other people when the rest of the world must look at us and think we are kings. the average worldwide income is 7,000. "An American having the average income of the bottom US decile is better-off than 2/3 of world population." so even if you are at the very bottom of the USA you are better than 2/3 of the world!!!!

maybe we should all (myself included) spend a little more time introspectively looking at ourselves instead of spending so much time looking at others.

I don't think it's my world class equipment that allows me to shoot better than all of you, but it doesn't hurt. My charm and good looks obviously have nothing to do with it either, but they do allow me to look good and be charming while I do it! :D

I get looks for my expensive toys at the range, and I shoot pretty damn well. Sometimes, I even let the gawkers shoot some of my expensive toys and burn through a little of my ammo. Maybe, if you'd have offered the guy a pointer or two, he'd have let you shoot his rifle. I don't think you meant your post to sound jealous, but it does come off that way.

So, you like to let strangers handle your toy?
