Hey All,

I have been listening to ..on the internet...a country radio station that plays an awesome mix of country music. Here at work and at home in my den..KAFF AM.. Flagstaff, Arizona.

Hank, Buck, Merle, Johnny Paycheck, Tammy, Loretta and others...

But...

Then they throw a mix of Todd Snider, Hank III, (the late)..Levon Helm, Wayne Hancock, Reverend Horton Heat, Robert Earl Keene, Bobby Bear (yeah he's an oldie)and a ton of others. No.. it's not that new stuff they call country...but great talent that for some reason doesn't make Oklahoma Country Music????

I've been tempted to write or call the general manager at 96.1Kxxy and beg him to listen to KAFF AM..for a week amd get some fresh ideas on country music.

So, who's some of your..not necessarily favorite..but good musicians who don't or won't get played on Oklahoma airwaves....Country Music..not the other stuff...unless it's smooth jazz.

(Im a touring and recording metal/hardcore/industrial/instrumental-fusion guitarist as well as a bigtime fan of all types of music and none of my music or the stuff I listen to get played on mainstream radio. Just the way it is).

I like non mainstream music of all types. Matter of fact, if its on the radio then I usually dont like it as much. Ive met Keene. I have been to literally 100s of the Reverends shows- years ago when I moved from California to Iowa he would be playing in Minneapolis and we would be in Des Moines and hear he was playing there and a bunch of us would jump in the car and run up there to catch his shows. We play Hank 3rd alot, even for the metalheads at the shop. I moved to Tulsa mainly for my wife but also for the music and especially to track down Junior Brown who was supposed to be living in Tulsa at the time. He slays me with the guit-steel.

Now, for old skool folk and country, here is an up and coming guy who I really like and also know a little. A friends label promotes him. You can catch him around Tulsa and the surrounding area, for now.

Awesome. When I was bumming around in Austin many years ago he was one of my biggest idols there, besides SRV and Joe King Carrasco. I started out on classical guitar as a kid but as I got older and changed over to electric I sought out better instructors. Thats what got me to Austin. My uncle lived out at Lake Travis so with a place to stay I went down there to find some bluesy but rock players to learn from as I was trying to get away from the regimented world of classical and learn blues and instrumental rock styles. I found and got lessons with a guy named Van Wilks. He is one of Austins best kept secrets. Billy Gibbons looks up to HIM, he's that good.
