I have had some people ask me about this rifle I had made so I thought I would give a field report for you guys.
Base gun is a NEF handi-rifle in 45-70 stainless steel. I sent the barrel off and had it tapped for a savage smokeless breech plug. I put a Boyds forest camo laminate thumbhole stock on it. Has a DNZ scope mount with a Nikon Prostaff 3x12x40 on it, I want to reach out to 300 yards with this set up.
Recipe, using data from others off of Dougs. I choose Reloader 7 (70 grains) Hornady .40 cal 200 gr sabot SST flextip. Winchester 209 primers. This gave me 2900FPS and shot lights out at the range!
Ok to the hunt I was sitting over the feeder where the deer and pigs had been coming in right at dark or a little after. I was losing light fast so I got out of the stand and went down to a little revine about 20 yards from the feeder. It was 710 pm I could shoot till 714pm. As soon as I got in place I heard them but could not see them or where they were coming from. At about 712pm they popped out under the feeder and I picked the one facing me. I was aiming for her head but missed a little left and hit her in the spine. The bullet entered traveling front to back it with no exit. The pig dropped right where it stood no kicking or anything it was DRT.
Overall I could not be happier with this set up and hopefully I can put it to work on a deer this weekend.
