Avoid budget pistols like Lorcin, Jimenez, Glock, Davis, and Hi Point. Buy a good gun!

Don't be lumping the Hi point in there with them other pistols, I framed houses for years with a hi point. Been a great hammer and door stop and as a pistol at SD range it is a beast aaaaaaaand when ya run outa booolits you beat the bad guy to death with the beast!!

Sorry for the OP's bad experiences, but from the ones I've seen the damn things just seem to work.

I don't care for the plastic sights that look like a fat lady in a white dress walking past a white picket fence.
(Yeah, I stole that description from somebody.)
Fortunately accessories like holsters, different sights, etc are easy to find.

Glocks don't feel the greatest in MY hand (some of the chunky little compacts feel downright weird).
Glocks are also ugly as sin, but beauty is as beauty does.

When it comes down to it...I don't really care about the look and the feel of a fire extinguisher either, I just want the (bleep of a bleep) to work when I grab it up to use it.

Nothing man made is perfect, but the Glocks I've seen have worked well.
And in this day and age of so much stupid s*** that doesn't, that's a refreshing change.

I own many Glock's and every one of them have all performed without a hiccup. They will eat anything I feed them and I carry a couple different Glocks at any given time to protect me and my family. I swear by my Glocks.

Although, I do love my 1911's and my Hi Powers but I only trust my life with my Glocks.

I have owned and shot the crap out of Glocks of various models and calibers since about 1995. The main thing I like about them, other than the simple fact they are super reliable guns, is the ease of maintenance and availability and the low prices of parts and all kinds of stuff for them. Oh, yes, and their magazines are super reliable and durable; almost failure free. A metal shell with a polymer outer, tough as they can be made, the heart of a semi-auto is the magazine and there is no better mag made IMO. Anyway, as to the Glocks, I have jazzed some of 'em up, and some...not. If I could only have one it would be a Gen 4 19 ( I don't like the ambi on the Gen 5, it just bugs me). There really is no need for a Vickers this or a Ghost that or a Lone Wolf gizmo whatever, or any other extended slide lock, or extended mag release, or lighter connector, or flat trigger. Leave it alone, shoot it, clean it, replace the recoil spring ass'y every 5,000 rounds as suggested, with a factory one, and you'll be good to go with a pistol you can trust. As far as the grip angle, that's just silly stuff, widely spread by the internet. Guys read that crap, and I guess it's trendy to whine about it. It's not a big deal. Many, if not most pistols feel different when you first handle them. Is the Beretta 92 a good gun? Yep. Fat grip though. Get over it. Is the Sig P226 a good gun? Yep, heavy DA trigger on the first shot though. 1-800-WAAA. Is the Xd a good gun? Yep. If you wanna carry something made in Croatia or whatever its name is this month. Ever notice how big the aftermarket is for them. It's small. Good luck. Every make and model of pistol seems to have some idiosyncrasies. You get used to it, it's not like you're shooting it in the Olympics, it's a defensive handgun. Think Minute of Bad Guy, not 1-ragged hole in slow fire at 25 yds. Glock: It's made for cops, and the Military, and the Average Joe who maybe goes to the range every other month or so, and maybe isn't so fastidious about maintenance as most of us here are...and who one night, gets surprised at the gas pump by some pistol-waving, wild-eyed thug threatening him and his family. He needs to be able to draw, shoot, and stop the threat. He needs for his pistol to work, and Glocks do that well.

Now, having said that, I'm interested in a 48 too, it seems like a slimmed down 19, which a lot of people have been asking for. I too like the full grip. I don't care how small the Sig P365 is, its just to small for my liking. (I could get over it though, if I needed to). But, why? The 48 seems to be right, to me. 10-rounds in a very slim, easy to conceal defensive handgun sounds good. It's more than I am ever likely to have to fire in anger again in my life. Anymore than that, you're in G19-territory size wise anyway. Holsters galore will soon be avaialbe from good makers for the 43X and 48.

And it's not an expensive gun. Buy one , shoot it, and if you decide you aren't crazy about it, sell it. You aren't going to be out much of a loss. Maybe $50? Go buy a Wilson or an Ed Brown and then, shoot it, maybe carry it some and try to sell it,and see how much you lose on it though. Probably more than $50 bucks. But they are entirely different guns, it's great to have choices. Buy what you want.

So yeah, I'll probably get a 48 pretty soon, and I'm sure it will be fine. Now, if you will excuse me, I'm going to run a patch or two through the barrel, swab out the chamber, and re-lube my Sig M11 A1 and my Walther PPS M2, my two main carry guns before I hit the rack. Might as well wipe down my J-frame too, I did pocket carry it today for a bit after all.

Nicely said.

Cliff notes version for the slow:

Glocks are purty good guns. It's easy to get stuff for 'em. Lots of other guns are good to, but some not so much. I have had a bunch of Glocks. I like em fine. I own a few other kinds too.
