As soon as I read the intro I figured something like a 2-speed differential. Not a new concept.
Turns out that's pretty much what it was.

I would think it would be easier, and probably the way it was used, to simply select 'power' (!) or 'economy' first, then row through the 4 available gears.

Actually a good idea in a low powered vehicle.

Had a 1971 TR6 that I changed the transmission in, bought one from a mechanic that had a electrical version of the same thing, flip a switch for a high and low range. It did have a lockout that disabled it in reverse though.

I wish I could find some pics from a build I did on my old 1990 K5.

I added the 2.72 planetary gear reduction using the factory np241 transfercase planetary gear set between my transmission and an aftermarket Atlas II transfercase.

The setup had a stick for the front gear reduction, and 2 sticks on the Atlas transfercase that controlled the front and rear axle engagement independently. I had a 2.72 or 4.3 to 1 low ranges... And an 11.70 low range with both the planetary reduction and the transfercase shifted to low.

So with the 4 speed transmission, there were what, 16 speeds.

The gear reduction was so low, the disc brakes on the Dana 60 and rear Corporate 14 would not hold the K5 at idle.

I dug up the old post on COK5 when I was building the setup. To bad the pics don’t work. That was a long time ago, but seems like yesterday.

ah yes the only new car i ever bought,, a 1980 plymouth champ, also sold as a doge colt...they simply added a other gear inside the tranny to give a high or low range...it seamed like a quick little car ,but it wasent it just sounded like it was ,,1 and 2 gears were close enough,as were 3 and 4,, but there was a drop between 2 and 3,so i used the twin lever to keep the engine roaring,,,2 different ways to do this 1 take off in 1 low ,shift into 2,still low, then shift low to high via the twin stick lever,(yes u had to push the clutch in), now 2 high, then stick out your right thumb to engage the twin lever and you could shift from 2 high to 3 low as the twin lever was between my leg and the main shift lever,,then to 4 low...or the 2nd way,, start off in 1 high, then 2 high ,then using the thumb stuck out shift from 2 high to 3 low, then to 4 low.weak trans blew up 2 of them,,,ac and heat barely worked...loud stero..cluthes didnt last, always had a stiff clutch too, 12K warrenty,,ruined me off FWD,,,and asian cars...IF U HAVE A SILVER CAR KEEP IT WASHED OFF,DULL AND DIRTY IT LOOKS LIKE THE ROADWAY AND PEOPLE DONT SEE IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
