I rebarreled my old R700 to use for work, and bought a Mauser M18 in 308 as a lightweight hunting rifle. It's based off the R700 long action, cost me $400 from EuroOptic. Paired with an illuminated Primary Arms 1-8 LPVO, it's put the smackdown on deer for a few years now. Light, fast, handy. I've shot steel out to 600 yards with it, but the farthest deer I've killed was about 70 yards.

It's not fancy, but it's well built, the price was right, and I've been pleased with it. My total cost was around $900, with optics, rail, rings and sling.

While I was in Germany, two friends of mine got to tour the Mauser/Blaser plant. The rifles are made with the same equipment, by the same employees, under the same roof. That Mauser was a bargain for the money.

I am late to the game and have not read the entire thread so this may already be covered. I have had good impressions of my Savage bolt guns. Not the AXIS (never tried them) but their regular models.

They are far from beautiful but I am more than pleased with its accuracy in my .270 version. I am sure the .308 would be similar.

American made too if that matters to you. It does to me.

I would not want a threaded barrel I have had them and I have no use for them.

Now the object its to keep it lighter than a heavy barrel for packing.
Now a threaded barrel assumes you are going to screw something onto the end of it.

Not a smart move for keeping weight down and keeping it short and easy to swing onto the target.

I have a Savage Axis with a threaded barrel in .223 and it is a sporter weight barrel and necked up to fit
the threaded end.
But behind that necked up area the barrel is actually thinner than my non threaded Savage Axis .223

I love my Savage 18" 10 SR. in .308 but it is heavy. Stupid accurate and easy to hold steady because it is heavier and has a wider forearm than the Axis.
Stiffer stock on the model 10 also and the Axis stocks need some tweaks to make them stiffer.
Easy and cheap though.
I wish they were a bit wider or flatter on the forearm though.

I have thought of making them wider with some epoxy, Not like you are going to hurt it .
I think I gave 150 each for them.

I guess you and I are in the minority, because nearly everyone I know wants a threaded barrel on their rifles to run suppressors. I have no desire to have a counterweight hanging off the end of my barrel just so I don’t have to wear hearing protection. :rolleyes2

Just saying, I would give you $2k for that if you decide to sell.

On shorter barreled rifles I like the threaded muzzle because I can put a blast diverter or flash suppressor on the end, making that shorter barrel more user friendly.
