Okie was a pejorative, as was "sooner." We took them and made them our own (e.g, making the state nickname "the Sooner State"), erasing those negative connotations. That's why there's a line in the state Centennial Song, Oklahoma Rising, that says, "I'm an Okie and I'm proud, So when you call me Okie, man, you'd better say it loud."
Cool!! So I can keep calling myself an Okie with pride!

It was California Slur for poor white trash escaping the problems being experienced due to drought , etc in this part of the world. It was later embraced as a badge of honor by native Oklahoman's who survived and came back
No wonder I freaking hate Califonians! It’s in my blood. Here all this time I thought it was because they’re all liberal idiots.

No sir I am more conservative than most people here by a wide margin , unlike many though I have had an opportunity to travel other places a LOT , I don't want to encourage outsiders with leftist leanings to come here and bring their baggage with them. In fact I do everything I can to dissuade them from coming when I am ask about the state . I let em know its a backward place where people cling to their guns and religion.
We have a winner!!!

They're not all liberal idiots. Just most of them. Aren't a lot of true native Californians, either. My brothers and I are the first generation of our family who were born there. Some but not all my cousins, as well. We ( myself & brothers) didn't stay, either.

Here, but occasionally There.
So the term I love, “Okie” is a negative word, that could be potentially taken by some as an insult? I’ve heard this before but I never really thought it was bad.

I'm old enough to have known both those that went to CA during the Depression/Dust Bowl and those that stayed behind. When asked if I objected to being called an Okie, I stated that those folks had the courage to pack up their entire family and move west with absolutely no guarantee of a job, and those that stayed did so with the courage to stick it out and survive.

So, yeah...

...Being an Okie is great.

(In fact, I'm related to both groups listed above.)

WA was the same way back in the 80s. You could get tshirts that said "Californians go home" and a cartoon "californian" nailed to a tree with an owl stuffed up his ass. They just kept coming and breeding and didn't stop until the Evergreen state turn into sh*t. East of the Cascades is turning to sh*t too. They're like a virus. Sad

My family did that! Even crazier, some generations after that, I was an AF brat and we came through here several times to be stationed at Tinker and as soon as I could I moved back.
