So I JUST had this exact problem and the coil is on its way for our upstairs unit on Monday. My guy is charging $500 for the labor but I just bought a downstairs unit from him too, so there's that.

Is it a Trane and is the coil covered under warranty? How old is it?

It's a Goodman, and it's 4 years old and it's covered. Not overly impressed with the coil going out this early, but my mother has one of the Signature Series Tranes that they've put on her house and she's replaced the coil twice, all under warranty.

Just had the same issue at my mothers house. Same quote to fix. Repairman was also the installer a few years ago and when he first quoted the deal he wasn't considering warranty. My mother quickly got to her paperwork and corrected him.

Parts warranty is supplied by the manufacturer and labor warranty is supplied by dealer(usually 1yr) if you buy an extended parts and labor warranty that is a third party like an insurance type company

It is in fact in the attic.

I was telling the tech I was surprised a Trane would have these problems (several years of TXV's being bad) as I thought they were one of the best. He said he really liked Rheem. He said Rheem did have a bad year of leaky A coils, but Rheem replaced them parts and labor.
Of course had I bought the extended warranty the labor would be covered.
Turned out Trane didn't have a txv problem it was a corrosion inhibitor that compressor manufacturer was using gummimg up the txv and all manufacturers that used that brand of compressors had the same problem

I've done hundreds of them I think it is a pita too

Different strokes for different folks. Its not like you have to replace the case. just slide the old coil out of the case and slide the new one back in.

It's all kinda fun for me until you get to installing ductwork. I HATE doing that.
