I'm not very competitive but I've found that checkered wood works well for me. I have double diamonds just cause I like the look. I had some black rubber uncle mike's with finger grooves but they were dragging on my mags so I switched em out. The Hogue checkered walnut grips are sharp and give me all the grip I need. Checkered mainspring housing instead of ribbed and the grip is solid.

imo, those are nasty looking.
He was selling those on a lot of gun boards. The plastic of the grips he stipples is much softer than micarta or G10. Unless you have sensitive skin, you would have been better off with any of the others mentioned.

While we are on the topic of 1911 gripping surfaces. Does adding some of the 3M tape to the front strap help with your grip whatsoever or is that just an internet ninja rumor?

My Kimber doesn't have any checkering on the front strap.
