The 308 is an excellent choice for deer. Its light recoil and has a wide variety of loads for all game in Oklahoma plus it will cover most yardage an ethical hunter would take game.

No doubt, 308 is pretty much the measuring stick of deer cartridges - you can't go wrong.

P.S. I've had a deer run 75 yards after a lung-heart-lung shot with 7mm: the chest cavity was homogenized soup and yet it RAN!

yup been usin it for years BLR. Hornady's light mags will give you a little more umph but don't use them in gas op guns. 7-08 is also a hummer a little better balistics but it has to get way out there 1st

I currently have a 300 win mag, but it just has a lot of recoil. I'm looking for something smaller like a 308 with 150 grain bullets. Should I consider a bigger grain or is 150 enough?

You'll do with that or a good 30-30. We have a clown down here who thinks anything less than a 338Lapua will cause you to loose to many deer.:shocked:

I know a guy that shot a doe with a 7mm mag and blew most of the hind-quarters off. That three-legged deer (what was left of it) dressed out at around 40lbs I believe.

You can be overgunned but a 308 would be a good choice, heck look how many deer are killed with a 22 mag! just goes to say shot placement is the most important part of killing deer. Yep I preach shot placement sorry :D Later,

Too many deer or too many pieces of deer? Seems like the .308 Win. should cover any part of the State, from S.E to N.W. I wouldn't feel under-gunned. Heard the .243 mentioned, split the difference, .260 Rem. w/140g. SP or 7mm/08 again w/140g. SP. :twocents:

I use the .300 Short Magnum for deer because it's the best rifle I've got.
If you can thread a needle with a .22 center fire go for it. A careful hunter could get a deer with .22 long rifle if his kids were hungry.
