This is what I've found so far. They are hard plastic masks with an area to use smaller pieces of a regular mask for the filter.

When I was a kid, my Dad had an aluminum mask frame (held on by elastic bands) with replaceable filters, and wore it when brush-hogging.

Hadn't even thought of that in years. No idea if you can still get them.
