I set out to test a few bullets today in my 1911, the only one I successfully tested was a 185gr hornady zmax and I wasn't pleased, here's the test, through 1/2 of plywood, through a milk jug and stop in a phone book, from about 7 yds, the hornady didn't expand.
The other one I tested was 230 gr Winchester szx45 jhp. I'm guessing it plugged in the wood and went FMJ on me and kept blowing through the phonebook. So I had to do another test and it was through a milkjug into a phone book and it performed great, nice mushroom. Looks like it would be effective on light clothing.
The other bullet in the pic is a FMJ that stopped on the surface of my back stop after going through the 4" side of a 2x4
