Self defense is an entirely personal/individual thing--it is not a one size fits all thing. Putting the title of the article aside, I would think that the ideal SD weapon for anyone is the weapon that he or she feels most comfortable/confident with and the weapon that he or she can operate correctly/accurately/repeatedly.

An older lady I work withwanted a gun after her neighbor had a home invasion. I sold her a 6" Taurus .357 and gave her some light .38 specials to load it up with. Figured it would be easier for her to handle than the 12ga this other guy suggested. She still hasn't taken it out, so who knows...
