Howdy shooters,

I just thought I would give you a heads-up that Oklahoma's first Appleseed of 2013 will be at Excalibur Sporting Goods in Afton, OK on Feb. 9-10. The IT folks who run our website are struggling to process the large number of events nation-wide that are being scheduled for 2013, so it is not yet posted on the website or open for registration. I will post an update with the links to the registration page when it is posted. The charge will be $80 for the weekend, or $50 for one day. There are discounts for certain groups to whom we believe it is especially important to promote our heritage of gun ownership, marksmanship, and liberty. This includes women, under 21, current military, law enforcement, and elected officials. Due to recent events I have also made the decision to allow employees of educational institutions to attend for free. To take advantage of this offer, select the military/law enforcement discount when registering for an event.

For those who don't know, Appleseed is a training program that teaches the fundamentals of rifle marksmanship from field positions. The curriculum is based around the 25m Army Qualification course of fire from the days of the M1 and M-14. Any safe rifle will work, and if you bring it we will help you become a better shot with it. However, there are parts of the course of fire with significant time pressure, and is geared toward rifles that feed from magazines or clips. We also have a procedure that will allow tube feed rifles to keep up. Rimfire rifles are fine. Using the sling as a marksmanship aid is heavily emphasized. We strongly encourage you to have an adjustable 2-point sling installed on your rifle; preferably a GI web sling or M1907 leather sling. The program has a strong emphasis on the fundamentals of marksmanship, and is great for beginners, self-taught shooters, and experts alike.

Anyone who shoots Expert on the AQT will be awarded our Rifleman patch. We have a special "winterseed" Rifleman patch if the score is shot during harsh winter conditions... a definite possibility for early February in Oklahoma!

Appleseed is also about promoting American heritage. We tell the amazing true story of the first day of the Revolutionary War, and the events leading up to it. This is some amazing true history that you have probably never heard if you haven't been to an Appleseed before... it is certainly not taught in schools.

Join us for a great weekend on the range, and be a part of Appleseed's mission of returning this country to a nation of Riflemen!

State Laws to be aware of: It is illegal to possess a concealed firearm, loaded or not, on or about the person without a handgun permit recognized by Oklahoma. Oklahoma recognizes all other state’s permits. Oklahoma law provides several ways of transporting a firearm in a motor vehicle that are affirmatively legal with or without a permit: As long as you are not a convicted felon, you may legally transport a rifle, shotgun or pistol open and unloaded, which Oklahoma law defines as in plain view, in a case designed for carrying firearms that is wholly or partially visible, in a gun rack, or in an exterior locked compartment or trunk.

Also, any person except a convicted felon may legally transport a rifle or shotgun concealed behind a seat of the vehicle or within the interior of the vehicle, as long as it is not clip, magazine, or chamber loaded. Handgun permit holders may legally transport a clip or magazine loaded rifle or shotgun in a vehicle.

Check state laws for other pertinent legislation.

What to Bring: Please see the following list of items to bring to your Appleseed event - http://appleseedinfo.org/smf/index.php?topic=101.0

Misc: This event will be held at Excalibur Sporting Goods in Afton, OK. Just yards from the range is a full-service gun shop where you will be able to purchase ammo, GI web slings, sling studs/swivels, Tech Sights for the Ruger and Marlin, and complete Liberty Training Rifles based on the Ruger 10/22 and Marlin 795. Mike will install any parts you purchase from him. Excalibur’s air-conditioned/heated classroom will be available for our use over lunch and for breaks. Most of the event will be shot from 25 meters. However, full-distance shooting techniques will also be taught. Shooters may use either center fire or rimfire rifles for this event. We will be shooting from an uncovered line, so bring your umbrellas, sun shades, and pop-up covers if you have them. Our hosts will be serving hot lunches on Saturday for a small price. Snacks and beverages will also be available for purchase. Shooters should bring their own lunch on Sunday.

In order to keep the current nationwide ammo shortage from impacting Appleseed attendance, we will attempt to make .22 LR ammo available for purchase at every event. We also have plenty of .22 "Liberty Training Rifle" loaners available for those who do not have a rifle to bring to the event. To reserve ammo and/or loaner rifles, contact Daniel Hensch at least a week prior to the event.

Thanks Mike! The next one is at USSA in Tulsa on April 20-21... Lexington and Concord anniversary weekend. There is a separate thread on it. The next Afton shoot is on June 8-9. Start scrounging for ammo now!
