Is wearing a safety mask overkill? I figured Id buy one for such an occasion.

I generally use an old machinist apron and I always have eye protection.
To easy to be safe.

And like dlbleak said when smelting (melting down raw materials the first time to clean it up and pour in a handier form) extra precautions are a good idea.
You never really know what kind of crap might be stuck on or mixed in.

Any safety PPE is not overkill. A grinding type mask would be great.

Get or make an ingot mold and, like the post above says melt it down and clean it, them pour it into ingots. It will be easier to store and handle.

Check with stock car racers for lead. They some times have lead ingots laying around they use to set their cars up.
Cons: It may be hard to get them to sell.
Pros: The ingots are usually big, 25# or so.
Or see if they have some in a "retired" car.
