Custom roof rack, used to mount a large roof top tent - $160 That’s less than half the cost of materials. This could easily be adapted to fit other vehicles if you chopped the mounting brackets off and just used the flat rack.

Yessir, this was mounted on a 2013 4Runner. It is higher off the roof than the $1000 high-end racks from Gobi, Frontrunner, etc. You could lower it by chopping the brackets but we needed it higher to clear some hardware under a roof top tent.

Check out the attachments on the post and you'll see it mounted up. It uses the factory holes and factory bolts from the stock roof rack, which is very easy to remove. You then need to place some spacers that I have to make sure the bolts line up right and you can seal it all up with some clear silicon. I can help you install if you have a 5th gen 4Runner.
