Being a public health communicator is very difficult....you need to always predict the future correctly and motivate people to change without causing a panic.
I do not understand Fauci well but have a hard time seeing him as purely egotistical or avaricious.

He probably should have said that, "Based on the information we currently have mask wearing is not needed in the U.S." Instead he erred by going too far to reassure people. Public health communicator is a tough role to fill.

Let me draw a comparison many of you my age can directly appreciate. Not that many years ago the dreaded digital prostate exam was standard. Then seemingly out of the blue it is no longer done.....???? How to explain this? One explanation is that doctors are idiots. The right explanation. however is that standards of care changed in response to research which showed that it was not beneficial on balance.
