From John Farnam's Quips:

June 10

"... going to guns!"

In any domestic personal-security emergency, where a deadly-force response
is clearly indicated, or reasonably anticipated, getting pistols deftly
drawn from concealment and aimed, or at least leveled, at the threat(s)
requires a finite amount of time, usually exceeding a second, and for many,
approaching two.

But, that is the fastest component!

We must add the time it takes us to mentally go from condition "yellow,"
through to "black," so our deadly-force response can even download, and
ultimately initiate.

It is here that denial, indecision, and dithering represent fatal errors.

You can practice extensively, responding to a whistle or any other signal,
drawing and firing. And, as you progressively eliminate unnecessary parts
and motions, you can get your times down to about as short as they will
ever be. And, without doubt, we should all do that!

However, without the addition of scenario-based exercises, dithering will
still predictably add as many as five seconds to your response time,
rendering your lightening-draw, and the balance of your finely-tuned physical
skills, all but irrelevant!

Through scenario-based training, we learn what to look for. We also learn
how to integrate verbal, postural, movement, observational, and
deadly-force skills into a coordinated strategy.

We learn how to disrupt our opponent's plan, slowing his ability to
concentrate, disturbing his focus, dis-coordinating his deception scheme, and
delaying/befuddling his physical attack.

These skills are every bit as important as gun-skills, and, like
gun-skills, must be hard-wired through extensive practice.

Just because you skillfully operate a toaster, doesn't necessarily mean you
can "make breakfast!" "Making breakfast" calls for a number of
integrated skills, of which "operating a toaster" is, for all its grandeur, only
one.

By itself, "operating a toaster," no matter how masterfully, will not get
breakfast served!

Makes a lot of sense, Mike. A helpful quote from Farnam. I look forward to the 8-28-10 CQT class. I plan to soak up all I can, never been exposed to Force-On-Force. Just read about it the last couple of years over on Gabriel Suarezs' 'Warrior Talk' web site. It's funny how parts of it go against all the square range indoctrination I've had for thirty years. Never occurred to me you might be wrestling, grappling and fighting with a loaded pistol on your belt. Or that OWB Kydex holsters can be torn off of your belt.

The media's morbid fascination with violence:

BBC recently produced a "documentary" on the unrelenting criminal violence
in South Africa.

They focused on the "controversial" policy adopted by courageous South
African Police of actually shooting violent criminals when they threaten
people.

Not surprisingly, BBC is editorially opposed to the policy, but, with all
their hand-wringing, they propose no alternative, except that good and
decent people should expect to be murdered, raped, tortured, and maimed by
violent felons and ought to accept it as their lot. They should surely never
even think of doing anything to so much as inconvenience criminals!

In SA, crime is everywhere. Violence is common. Citizens are frightened.
Politicians and bureaucrats, there as here, dither hesitantly, endlessly.
So, police they have adopted the radical notion that, when someone is a
violent murderer, you might have to actually do something physical, tangible,
and serious. Perish the thought!

After countless violent murders, citizens themselves, weary of waiting on
bungling political buffoons to actually do something, have armed and
organized. But, the situation has not improve much.

Contrary to popular fable, guns, in isolation, are not the "Great
Equalizer" of legend. Intense training and hard skills are still required, or the
gun itself represents little more than a rabbit's foot!

Even when you naively entertain the long-since discredited notion of
shooting for a purpose other than projecting deadly force (eg: shooting to
wound), it still requires skill!

Competent training is one element the media consistently ignores and
pretends doesn't exist.

Arming sheep does little more than produce 'armed sheep!"

The last paragraph says it all.

13 Sept 10

New scam, from a female friend and student:

"Last Saturday afternoon, I pulled into the parking lot at our local
Walmart. As I put my car in park, I looked to my left to see that someone had
rushed up to my car and was pounding frantically, with both fists, on my
driver's-side window, which was rolled all the way up.

It took me a second or two for me to understand what was happening. The
one doing all the pounding was a brown-eyed, five-year-old girl, so short
that she was looking up at me as I sat in my car! An adult male, standing
right behind her, was actually pushing her up against my car. As he forcibly
jammed her into my door, he was ordering her, in a loud voice, to hit my
window. In addition, she was repeating a line the man behind her was
instructing her to say.

I then noticed that she was holding an open box of 'weathered' candy bars,
also jammed against my window, and was whimpering, in broken English, that
I needed to buy a candy bar, in order to 'help pay my bill.'

I foolishly opened my window a crack, and, before I could say anything, the
man said, also in broken English, that they needed money to 'send the girl
to school.' He then demanded that I roll the window down the rest of the
way.

I became incensed at this disgusting scam, and, in perfect English, yelled
at him to get out of my face! I put my car in drive and slowly rolled
forward. The man and the girl moved away quickly.

In retrospect, I did not handle the situation well. I need to realize
that there are some people who are sick and desperate enough to place innocent
children in harm's way while committing crimes! I should have disengaged
immediately, pulling away slowly while ordering them both to get away,
without ever opening the window, even a crack.

I immediately reported the incident to Wal-Mart management, and gave them a
detailed description of the man and little girl. I also suggested they
call the police. I was assured (amid yawns) that they would 'look into it.'

We really are 'on our own!'

I feel sorry for desperate people, but I'm ready to carry a gun now! I
didn't think I'd ever say that. I was stupid and naive. Not any more!"

My Instructor's reply:

"... 'feelings' could not be more irrelevant! What is important is
anechoic mindset, perception that is (1) accurate, (2) sharp, and (3)
emotionless, correct responses (well trained-in and ready to download
instantly),
combined with weapons, including guns, always carried, that may be needed to
successfully disengage from any threat.

Excess emotion is actually a hindrance. My use of force, even deadly
force, is never anything personal. No one has a right to employ criminal
violence to victimize me, and, when it happens, my response is, for lack of a
more polite term, "conditioned."

I'm surely happy that you were not harmed, nor was anyone else, this time!

Don't wait too long to take the next step!"

/John
