I just got a M1A and I am looking for some good quality mags. I know the factory springfield ones are good but they are $43 a piece. Is there another brand that might cost less and still be as good?
Checkmate Industries (CMI) I believe is the USGI contractor.
I believe that Springfield gets their mags from Checkmate Ind. The best price on the net that I've found is at www.44mag.com they sell CMI 20 rounders for $20.
I got my CMI mags from palmeto state armory.com couple months ago for about 20$ if I remember right. They are the best mags like everyone said.
I got some mags from cheaperthandirt.com that have been trouble free. They are the ones advertised as "W" marked and with the overwhelming majority of reviews being positive. 15 bucks I think. Check the reviews closely if you shop for mags on that site. They list several brands of mags, some will have 20 or so customer reviews posted and not a single reviewer saying they could even make the mag function. At least you know they are honest and not just cherry picking good reviews to post.

I had great luck with the Tiawanese (I think) type 57 mags. I bought a pile of em for $12 apiece and they worked fantastic.
+1 for 44mag.com....Armalite was also selling CMI's, not sure if they still have them though.
There are a LOT of phony USGI M1A mags out there, some work, most suck. I only buy them from reputable dealers.
