Will an M-16/AR-15 mag work with a Ruger mini-14? Both are .223 and to me look very similar. Just wondering since I have about 8 M-16 mags and Mini-14 ones seem to be a bit steep. Thanks for help with the noob question.

I've had several Mini-14's and they worked well as long as the magazine was made by Ruger. Mine did not like aftermarket magazines at all.

I have had good luck with Ruger factory 20 and 30 rounders. Go to CDNN for good prices.$25 for a new Factory 20 round and $30 for a new Factory 30 rounder. I have had good luck also with Thermolds and some PMIs but they PMIs are hit and miss. Also to answer your question the Mini mag is 4mm narrower than the AR mag and has a hole drilled in the front at the top to lock the mag in. Similar to an AK magazine lock.

A few years ago I was researching the same question, what aftermarket MAG will work for the mini 14? The general consensus was that PMi makes the only decent aftermarket MAG. I bought several and they have all worked well, cannot say the same thing for usa brand.
