Once we had Buffalos who were a bother so they nearly eradicated them. Maybe we should do the same to ferrel hogs. It would make some great dog food or feed the animals in our zoos.
A North Dakota railroad surveyor once stood on a high point from which he added up what he saw:
“For a great distance ahead every square mile seemed to have a herd of buffalo upon it. Their number was variously estimated by members of the party, some as high as half a million. I do not think it any exaggeration to set it down at 200,000.” It sometimes would take hours for a herd to pass they were so huge and it sounded like thunder long before they were in sight and the ground shook with the beat of thousands of hoofs.

The Bison: from 30 million to 325 (1884) to 500,000 (today)

WebAn estimated 2 million are killed on southern plains in one year. An average of 5000 bison were killed every day of these three years. That’s 5.4 million bison killed in 3 years. The bison population reaches it’s lowest point. Around 325 wild bison are left in the United States – including 24 in Yellowstone.
