How Firestone shut Ebola down in Liberia

Polly Davis Doig, Newser staff 12:01 p.m. EDT October 8, 2014

You know all the gnashingof teeth about how terrible the global response to the Ebola outbreak has been? Maybe someone should check with Firestone.

As NPR reports, the tiremaker runs a rubber plantation and basically the entire town of Harbel, outside Monrovia, Liberia. And when an employee's wife turned up with the virus on March 30, Firestone Liberia's managing director says they "went into crisis mode."

Upon discovering that there was nowhere to treat her, the company turned to the Internet for help in treating Ebola itself. Within a day, they had an Ebola ward. Within two, the woman was quarantined. They handed medical workers hazmat suits to prevent the virus' spread.

"None of us had any Ebola experience," says the director, but NPR notes that they did have what everywhere else in the region did not: The muscle and resources that a major corporation can harness.

The woman died, but not one of Firestone's roughly 8,500 employees and 71,500 family members contracted the virus. Months passed, and when the virus rampaged through the area in August, Firestone stepped up to the plate: It expanded the isolation ward, built an annex and quarantine centers, and sent out-of-work teachers (schools had been shut down) to go door-to-door and educate.

Janitors were taught how to properly bury the dead, notes the Wall Street Journal. It runs its hospital ward with military-like precision, and at present it's down to just three patients, a trio of boys whose homes are outside the plantation.

As for what's needed to contain the outbreak, a CDC rep says simply: "More Firestones."

Our massive central Government has sucked all the oxygen "money" from the room. They are reduced to blaming individual hospitals and states for their failures.

A day or so ago our intrepid leader chided "the world" for not doing enough to combat the ebola crisis.

It will be a sight to behold the day he finally just throws the entire world under the bus, then dusts his hands off and strides away.

True, however states can handle this. Why hasn't Gov Perry locked down Dallas? Or why hasn't the Mayor or Dallas city council asked for help or provided leadership?

Hospitals are run by they same kinda ppl that run our Govt.....bottom line is profit. And this is why Nurses are walking out n ***** in bout policies n protocols n equipment.

RN, Charge Nurse, Nursing Director, Hospital CEOs, City Councils, Mayors, Govornors, CDC, DHS, President.......that's the chain of command or close to it.

Rick Perry is afraid to be a leader. He is afraid of the blame that could come from it. Ironically he is missing out on his best opportunity for people to see as a presidential contender. This Ebola situation desperately needs some leadership and for it to be taken as serious as it is. I have no doubt there are some no name heroes behind the scenes trying to press the urgency of this situation and we will never know their names until a movie comes out in 5 years detailing how they helped save our nation. Well, at least I really hope there are those people out there. We certainly have not seen hide nor hair of them yet.

I didn't know Gov. Perry could shut down travel in DFW, also the chain of command you mentioned surprised my Okie ass! I thought the CDC had this covered until today.
