Check out http://www.imediashare.tv/ if you have a PS3, XBox360, or one of the newer smart TVs.
I have a Logitech Revue Google TV box that will let me stream music, video, and pictures from other computers in the house, but it has its own wireless remote. I don't think it's controllable by other devices unless there's an Android app to allow that. It does run a limited set of apps from the Google Play store.

Simple. . . ready for it. . . ditch the android. iPad and apple TV. I feed all my video and audio from all of my devices to the TV via HDMI and then output the digital audio to one input on the receiver. I never have to change sources on the surround sound receiver, just input sources on the TV. Apple tv allows you to stream from iphone or ipad and to use your TV as a remote monitor with your macbook all wirelessly on your network.

Do you have a blue ray player that might accept DLNA on your wireless network? If so you should be able to sync up with the blue ray player over the wifi network and stream to it.

Oh and I have a terabyte NAS on my router access media content on the NAS from the macbook and airplay it to the apple TV.

It also allows you to use your iPhone or iPad as a remote control. At $99 the apple TV is a good deal if you can airplay stream from android to it it's a lot cheaper than that google orb at $299

Sonos. Best option period. Ipad/Iphone/Android apps, wirelessly stream music, internet radio, Pandora, a million other things and its' got RCA outputs to plug into your current audio source. If the price of the squeezebox was too high, though...

I'll do you one better, install the airplay app on your android give me a ring and come over and try the apple TV at my house,(as long as you aren't allergic to cats). If you have a windows laptop bring it and you can try the streaming from iTunes on windows to apple TV as well.

I might take you up on that. I haven't bought the tablet yet, I'm just trying to find a simple and cheap solution. I do have a Windows laptop and a Blackberry as a phone. It sounds like Apple has a seamless setup. I also do have a PS3 for my BluRay player.
