The best and cheapest place to get surplus .30 '06 for that M1 is from the CMP (the Civillian Marksmanship Program). To buy from them, you have to be a member of a marksmanship organization, and you have to show proof of marksmanship training (proving you were in the Army will cover the marksmanship training part).

The CMP also sells a scout scope mount for the M1 for $100 or so. That's the best way to go on scoping an M1, if that's what you want to do. However, I hope you're aware that the M1 has the best iron sights of any rifle in existence. You should at least shoot it a little with those, if for no other reason than to see what perfection looks like!

Then come to an Appleseed marksmanship clinic and we'll show you how to use that beautiful 1907 sling that rifle has on it, among other things. Do you know a sling like that (or a GI web sling) is the most potent marksmanship-enhancing aid you can put on a rifle? If you know how to use it, that is!

If you join Appleseed's parent organization, the RWVA, that also satisfies the requirement of being a member of a marksmanship organization, for CMP purposes. We're having a shoot at Badlands Tactical training facility down in Grandfield, OK on April 17-18... if you bring that M1 out, you'll have a chance to try it out on steel silhouettes out to 1000 yards!
