Cleaning is easy: wipe stuff down and relube as needed. Pull the cover off, remove spring assembly, take bolt out and wipe off, take top cover/gas tube off and consider cleaning, put back together and lube moving parts. AKs are ultra-reliable but it doesn't hurt to clean it if you're concerned.
The way it sounds only communists clean AKs.

That depends entirely upon what you're doing, your climate and what ammunition you're shooting.
The biggest plus to cleaning a gun is not so much the cleaning part but looking at things to see if they're broke or wearing excessively.
