Non-vital shot area for sure. Infection may be his demise, but sorry to hear he didn't recover the animal.

Yea that sucks, mechanicals are a no go for me as well. Sorry to hear that for your son and the buck. But that’s hunting, it just happens sometimes.
Bow shots, from a tree that shoots down will leave a low area on the exit wound to leave blood. Shoot one from a ground blind a little high, there will likely be no blood as it pools inside the animal.
OR, if the shot is between the lungs and spine which is high, its non fatal with little blood loss inside or out.
Good point on the ground blind shot between lung and spine, never really think about that not being a kill shot but your 100% correct, it misses everything.
