Don't sand - use strippers. Not the kind pictured below. Use the chemical approach with a medium toothbrush to work in and around checkering. If you sand you can't add back what you took off. Finish may be to your liking but the fit and detail will diminish. The chemical approach is better.
Chemical approach supposedly works with strippers too...

The gun is very uneek, beautiful wood grain, looks like it might have had an oil finish and someone sprayed it with a urethane. Might try the steel wool where there is no checkering. Another idea would be to try a rub on polish to try to smooth the finish out.
