He portrayed and I believe he lived true Americana. Gone too soon, and way to young.

Amazing man--hired as just an advisor for Full Metal Jacket, Stanley Kubrick changed his mind after seeing an instructional tape Ermy had put together for the cast's benefit. Ermy was allowed to write his own dialog and improvise during shooting and only needed two or three takes for each of his scenes, a rarity for a Kubrick film. It's sad to say, but Gunny won't be down for PT any more. Though not a Marine, may I speak for my late father (1st Marines, 1942-1945) and say, "Semper Fi."
Take care Gunny, at least we know Heaven will be squared away when we get there.
Gunny didn't die. He popped smoke, broke contact, and withdrew to heaven to regroup.
