Gunny didn't die. He popped smoke, broke contact, and withdrew to heaven to regroup.

Marines don't withdraw, they simply attack in another direction. RIP to the guy who personified a real Old School USMC Drill Instructor. Whenever I watch that opening scene in Full Metal Jacket, I almost just friggin' drop and by God and the Ghost of Chesty Puller just damned BEGIN! This guy would make you PT until he got tired.

He'll be missed.

Most people die from Pneumonia if they are ill from something else first or bedridden to any degree. It's not at all uncommon.
