I have a flat top 16" that I'd like to convert to a varmint type setup with 24" bull barrel. Should I just replace the barrel or should I look for a complete upper and swap it out? What are the downsides to just doing the barrel, other than needing a wrench and some way of holding things? Help a noob!
Hmm if it was me, I rather build a varmit upper so I have 2 uppers to play with.
cost wise you be ahead selling yours and finding what you want.
I'd buy a varmint upper and keep the carbine upper so you have both.

Better yet, buy a varmint KIT and then pick up another lower a paycheck or two from now....then you have BOTH rifles.
Or better still, buy that Bushmaster Varminter in the classifieds that includes a 6-18x Leupold scope.

Those are nice guns. You can always check midway for special run varmit uppers as well. How far out are you planning on shooting?
