I'm against it.

A last-minute rewrite of the bill expands the information that commercial Internet providers are required to store to include customers' names, addresses, phone numbers, credit card numbers, bank account numbers, and temporarily-assigned IP addresses, some committee members suggested. By a 7-16 vote, the panel rejected an amendment that would have clarified that only IP addresses must be stored.

It represents "a data bank of every digital act by every American" that would "let us find out where every single American visited Web sites," said Rep. Zoe Lofgren of California, who led Democratic opposition to the bill.

Lofgren said the data retention requirements are easily avoided because they only apply to "commercial" providers. Criminals would simply go to libraries or Starbucks coffeehouses and use the Web anonymously, she said, while law-abiding Americans would have their activities recorded.

They can go uckf themselves. And I say that will all due respect.

CNET reported the bill would require ISPs to retain customers' names, addresses, phone numbers, credit card numbers, bank account numbers, and temporarily-assigned IP addresses for 12 months.

The bill passed by a vote of 19 to 10, and is aimed at helping law enforcement track down pedophiles.

"The bill is mislabeled," Rep. John Conyers (D-MI), a senior member of the panel told CNET. "This is not protecting children from Internet pornography. It's creating a database for everybody in this country for a lot of other purposes."

I find it reprehensible that we actually have elected officials in this country who think this is ok. But considering their handling of the entire debt debacle, this shouldn't be surprising! :(

What's even more despicable is the fact that they named it the "Protecting Children from Internet Pornographers Act", so if you don't vote for it, it looks like you support kiddie porn. Reminds me of what they did after 9/11 affixing "Security" or "Terror" or even "Patriot" to every title so that no congressman would dare vote against it for fear of their voting record looking bad...

$10 says the RIAA's behind this bill...

The titles they give these things are straight out of Nineteen Eighty-Four. As a matter of fact so is a lot of American History.

A good rule of thumb is to be very suspicious of anything sold as being "for the children" or to "keep us safe" from whatever the current boogeyman is.

Way too much information and power on the internet; I'm surprised it's lasted this long without severe regulation, censorship and restrictions.
