I can't speak to the terms you are asking about, other than seeing vivid colors versus neutral colors. What many don't know is that Nikon started out making optical "glass" for the Japanese navy many years back. If you know anything about picking out objects on the surface of the water, you might understand how good lenses have to be.
When I decided to get back into SLR cameras back in 2005 or so, I decided to go with Nikon for both cameras and lenses because (at the time) Nikon lenses were considered to be the better lenses. Even though my latest lenses have come about within the last year or so, I'm still extremely pleased with the Nikon quality.
