You might try splitting them with wedges and a sledgehammer. They are probably straight-grained softwood, so they might be easy to split, unless they're 40 feet long!

Actually they are 36 feet long. If I found a mill they could not handle that and I'd have to cut them to their maximum length.

I like the trench idea - could use a middlebuster to do that.

i have alaska saw mill , ripped 1 inch off 3 inch bridge board for a 2 inch floor on my 20,000# trailer. they were 12 inches wide , my stil farm boss would not handle the load , rented realy big saw , hit lotts of metal even when i didnt had to sharpen chain every ten feet.
