I just started using CFE Pistol. None of the powder I had for 9 or 45 would work with the 40 and I had to buy something new anyway so it was between this or Longshot. Im not one that really cares a lot about how smokey a powder is. I loaded everything with bullseye and unique for years. But I will admit this powder is noticeably clean and smoke free. Now I've only shot about 20 rounds of it so far so I may change my mind after a few hundred.
Also Im only using 6.5gr so a pound will last me quite a while.
Winchester WST runs a .40 real well.
4.6 grains pushing a 180 grain BBI bullet makes a very nice plinking load.
Haven't tried that one either. I tend to stick with lighter bullets in .40's. I've loaded some 180's, but it's been with AA#5, 2400, Unique, and W571. Unique's so darn dirty I hate to use it, and 2400 and W571 both eat a lot more powder IIRC.
Agree on the old Unique. They have reformulated Unique in the last few years. Its a lot cleaner running now.
I have some unique from about 10 years ago that says new and cleaner formula but its still awful smokey. They may have revised it again since then. It really does not bother me if its smokey but I know it does some people.
