My prefernce if for the heart/lung shot. Every time. No shortage of deer around my hometown, so I can afford to be picky and pass up anything else that isn't a heart/lung shot.
Heart lung guy here as well. I have found two really nice bucks lying in the creek dead with their jaws shot off. I can imagine it was a slow death! The farther the deer is from you at the shot the more chance a neck shot can go bad.
I have shot several deer in the neck while gun hunting and have always drop them in their tracks. I shot one in the neck last year with my bow at 30 yards, and ended up tracking her a little over a 1/2 mile up and down coal pits in SW Missouri. My guess is that I must have shot low and just hit the wind pipe. Wouldn't suggest shooting them in the neck with a bow.
