What Does It Sound Like When the 16in Guns Fire?

From the USS New Jersey. About four minutes in, they start playing interviews with veterans describing what it was like when they fired the big guns.

I can tell you what it’s like to be on deck and 105 degrees off the muzzle of a 5” gun when it fires 10 rounds.

Let’s just say you won’t want that experience again!

My Dad was a plank owner on the USS Iowa and served in turret 1 thru out the war. I remember he said you didn't want to be on deck when they fired.

The ship doesn't move sideways in the water when the guns are fired. It does look like it. This was an old wives tale that went around for years. The muzzle blast causes the waves in the water. Just think about it, the ship is 883 ft long with a draft of 38 ft and weighs 58000 tons at full load.
