The use of the internal lever on the M&P is not mandatory. Just pull the trigger when removing the slide. "A la Glock...

Seriously I tried the XD compact and the M&P many times and on the same day switching back and forth trying to decide. When it came down to it for aim and shoot I was better with the XD for point and shoot (which is what would be used in a SD situation) I was much better with the XD. However a friend of mine was just the opposite. So as always it is always a good idea to shoot the gun before you decide if at all possible.

My cousin has one. It is very nice. Send it to olyeller for a trigger job, and you'll have one of the nicest triggers you can get in a polymer 9mm. 
Nice carry gun, if you decide to go with one, do your homework before you put down the green. They can be had in several configurations; no safety - mag safety - thumb safety. Just be sure you are buying what you want/need.
