I find it ironic that they are wanting to charge the person who shot it.... I'm sure they wouldn't be at all upset had it biten or killed someone.

I do agree that it should have been called in to authorities. They could have stayed there until they arrived.
If there were humans or pets endangered I'd be the first to pull the trigger

It's not an indigenous species and therefore shouldn't be covered by ANY of our game laws. Same as a wild hog as far as I'm concerned.

The American alligator is a Federally listed threatened species (by dint of similarity of appearance) known to occur in Oklahoma; given that most people wouldn't know the difference between an alligator and a caiman, perhaps that's why the authorities want to know who killed it. Yes, I know the American alligator occurs pretty much only in the SE corner of OK, but hey - coulda been a stray, much like the penguin that turned up 4,000 miles away from home on a New Zealand shore ;)

Not syaing that calling authorities wouldn't have been a prudent approach. All I'm saying is that IMHO there is no basis for filing charges against the shooter. I can assure you if it had shown up on my front yard it would have met the same demise (and I would have needed a new set of drawers).

Game Officials Want To Know Who Released Alligator In Adair County

WATTS, Oklahoma -- A gator lurking near the Illinois River was shot Monday afternoon. This was the same gator spotted several times over the past few months near Watts in Adair County.

Now, investigators want to learn who released it in the first place.

For months, people driving on this county road near Watts have seen an alligator in the water next to the road.

It's just a couple hundred yards from the Illinois River, so game wardens urged caution and hoped they could find and relocate the gator.

"The river here, there's lots of activity, with people in the summertime swimming, and everyday there are people here using the river and something like that could potentially pose a threat to the community," said Jared Cramer, State Game Warden.

The gator was finally discovered floating in the same oxbow by a man driving by on his motorcycle. It had been shot by a park ranger.

interesting note this morning stating that it was a game ranger who shot it!
