I'm no Vet but you need to get a second opinion. Just from the pic he looks healthy to me. Your guy said he needs to gain as much as 50% more of his current body weight?

he looks fine. I had a great Dane, great Pyrenees mix that never would put on weight even with the raw eggs, peanut butter and free feeding. He was old and in the last stages of his life before he ever got even a little fat on him and that was from not feeling good enough in his limbs to run anymore. everyone that found out he was a rescue dog would tell us that now that he had a good home he would begin to fill out.......we had him since he was about 4 months old and heard it until he was about 5.

Try better dog food. We would free feed our dogs the cheap food and they looked extremely skinny, but between the 2 of them (about 60 pounds each) they would go through a 40 pound bag in about a week. We switched their food to a high protein, less corn meal food and now a bag last over 2 weeks and they look healthy as can be. So in the long run we actually save money by buying less food, and they are a lot healthier looking.

I belive Puppy food tends to be higher in calories, pour in a little Swansons broth on top. I would say dog psychology would indicate that free feeding is incorrect. He knows he always has food so no need to over indulge, if you feed him once a day he will be hungry and unsure about when his next meal is so he will eat his entire serving.
