Cayenne pepper has worked for me in the past but you have to keep reapplying it.

I've also heard that dogs dig (and bark) because they can't see on the other side of their enclosure. I don't know if I buy it but there are several yards around here with little "peekaboo" holes cut in them. The dogs in this neighborhood still bark incessantly though ... Only really bad digger is the Lab that lives in the rental just north of us. If our yard wasn't bordered by an edge of concrete (previous owner of my house had a concrete fetish of some kind) he'd be in our yard more than in his, I'm sure ...

The little mutt that followed Nero and me home from the lake likes to dig in the middle of his and Nero's enclosure but not along the fence line. Now whether that is because it is where he and Nero have run a path bare of grass along the fence line or not I do not know. He has a couple of little platforms he can get up on to watch the chickens and the "backyard cat" so maybe that deters his digging some since he can see what is going on outside the pen they are in.

My dogs would debunk that notion, as my backyard is chain link on three sides with a privacy fence on the fourth side. Most of their holes have been along the chain link.

See ... I said I didn't buy it ... My dogs can see through their chainlink (but it has shade thingees threaded through it) but Dawg doesn't bark near as much when he can get on top of the bench and look over the shade slates ... Nero doesn't bark at all ... unless the pullets get right up to the pen and peck at his feet ... :rotflmao: Or the neighbors to the north let their dogs out in the back yard ... then all hell breaks loose ...

Hey Brother...

I use to always have a pack of Blueticks and Blackmouth Cur dogs around the house. I always trained them with a shocking collar. I'm out of the hunting business and have been turned into a city slicker..so I can't loan you a shocking collar.

Ask around, see if there are any hunting/AKC/UKC clubs in your area amd see if u can borrow one.

I don't know hiw "hillbilly" you'd want to go with this...but my dad in his dog pens did this..

Along the bottom of the fence he'd wire up ..chicken wire about 1 foot up from the bottom..attached to the fence...rolling out 2 feet away from the fence and staked it down.

When a dog would try to dig he'd wear out his paw pads on chicken wire. ..a few weeks into it and they give up..then he'd take it down.

PS...Redbones are good, redticks are good, black and tans are good, stay away from walkers....

GET YOURSELF A BLUETICK!!!

Good luck!!

I'd forgotten about this method - I tried something like this, but it didn't work.

The dogs pulled up the stakes and chewed them to pieces, or if they couldn't get them out, they chewed off the heads of the stakes. It was also a pain trying to move the chicken wire so I could mow the yard.

Yes, my dogs are incorrigible :P

2 Beagles and a Boston and the back half of our back yard (thankfully for some reason they dont dig closer to the house) is like a mini minefield after the bombs have gone off- holes every where. Not a big deal really but mowing sucks back there. The Beagles dig up the moles and catch birds and then give them to the Boston to eat. Only thing that works is a shovel to the head when you catch em digging. <Joking.

Cohiba, I'm going to attempt a small amount of cayenne pepper at first and may resort to chicken wire as it'd be easier to install/maintain as well as be a constant deterrent. I would think a shock collar would only be good if you can catch him in the act, but have been considering a shock collar for when I take him duck hunting (he gets a bit excited and tears off into the woods for a few minutes at a time). Any recommendations on what brands to get/stay away from?
