The relationship between you and the person you're being honest with, has to exist.........otherwise it's not taken as an honest statement, rather it would be taken as just being rude or inconsiderate......even if your statement is the truth.

If it's a friend or family member, I'll say whatever no matter what.

If it's a stranger and they ask my opinion, I won't hold back.

If it's a stranger and whatever they're doing is affecting me in some way, I won't hold back.

I'm also not opposed to watching someone fail at something, just for the sake of learning a lesson the hard way.......as long as it's not going to cause injury or bodily harm to someone :)

I like the way you put it...
This part "The relationship between you and the person you're being honest with, has to exist" I have to reflect on for a bit.

A guy once said ...to sit in silence when wrong is being done , is cowardice
To speak one's mind takes consideration, to speak without, to hurt someone else, makes an axx

When asked, I will say what I think. It may not be (likely won't be) how I feel, though. When asked, people want a truthful response, otherwise, why ask?

I will respond diplomatically. When asked, "Does this dress make me look fat?" I won't blurt out, "No, it's your eating habits." I will say, "A different dress might make you look slim, Dear." (I resolve such traps with a clear conscience and no bruises.)

Be careful of how you phrase things. You could say. "When I look at you, the hands of time stand still," and it is a compliment. You could say, "Your face could stop a clock," and it is an insult. In both instances you have basically said the same thing.

If you can't say what you think without other people getting upset, then you either need to change the way you think, or change the way you say it.

I think the poll is too broad. I tend to be direct, even blunt, but I try to exercise tact when needed. Having lived many years in the greater NY area, I find that most people around here can't handle "blunt" or "direct" like they can back east, and "direct" is often conflated with "rude.'

Yes, the poll is a little too broad. I suppose a brief explanation after voting will make up for the short comings of the poll.

Your second point has been my experience exactly. I lived in NY, Munich, and now OK (not in that order).
