I fundamentally disagree with the notion that these non-human-animals have less capacity/processing for intelligence, reasoning, emotion, communication, etc. than human-animals (i.e., we) do. We're not any better than them in any way. We need to stop acting like we own everything on the earth and leave these beings alone, which would go a long way in reducing incidents such as this one.

Agreed. Even domesticated animals can be unpredictable at times. But there are consequences to actions, no matter the life form.

agreed. but if someone decides to let their rug rat crawl around your backyard, disregarding the 'beware of dog' signs, you wouldn't overlook the fact that the situation wasn't created by your fido.

That is where i think the outrage is coming from. Had this parent not neglected to keep track of his/her child, the gorilla would be alive. There certainly could be other issues that come into play, but it all comes back to that moment where the kid 'flopped'.

If my kid 'flops' out of my arms and ends up in the ER, it's me the cops would talk to, does it not? \

Agree we probably should no longer have zoos. Is that ape better off here or in the zoo? It doesn't know any different, it gets food and water delivered each and every day. I don't believe the bold part to be true. When I watch a horse walk up to an empty feed bucket and stick his nose in it, I know what he wants. If I were to walk out to the corral with an empty dinner plate, and start licking it, that horse would NEVER know what I was doing, whether I was hungry or not. It doesn't know if it's been two hours or two weeks since I brushed it. It doesn't know that I drove out of the property in my truck, it doesn't know that it's a truck..........just that the object makes noise and moves. It doesn't ever wonder if I'm going to Atwoods to buy feed for it............... it can't. You could take every animal in existence and make the same comparisons. When we're out of sight, it doesn't know where we are. Can they be trained to do things WE want them to do, yes. Why do we know that some animals ARE dangerous, that some CAN be dangerous, and some are not? Because we can reason. NO animal has the same capacity to understand and reason like we do. If so, why do deer run away all year long, and not just during deer season? You'd think they'd figure out by now that they only need to run when it's cool/cold and the leaves fallen and grass is brown. It's really that simple........

how many examples of cows using sign language have you seen?

Not all animals are the same in terms of mental capacity*

*true for many humans, too. (perhaps for me too. I wont pass judgment until @YukonGlocker has had a chance to evaluate me)
Indeed. There is more variability within species than there is between species.

A kid doesn't climb a fence in a split second parents should be looked at for neglect. Also if a 3 year old can easily get into a gorilla pen like that the zoo may want to revamp security.

Sadly the way that gorilla drug that kid around I think that was the right choice to put it down.

Had they not made the decision and the child had been injured or killed, there would be as many, or more, people rake them over the internet "coals" as they are doing now for putting the animal down. A decision had to be made, made quickly, and by people who know more about animal behavior that the general public. It was the most sure way to save the child.
