Mrs. GED is changing jobs and she's gonna have a 35-40 mile commute (one way) everyday, and she wants a little compact something er other with a 4 cylinder engine to save on gas. Not wanting to spend more $5K but not wanting a piece of junk either.

I like anything with an automatic and Toyota 4 cylinder.
Corolla , Prisim, Vibe, Matrix, Camry.
I seen a Corolla in Denton with 256,000 miles for $900 the other day and nothing wrong with it.
I almost went there to get it.

Like I need another corolla.
Just that many of my friends ask if I know of a good car for cheap.

You must be quick on the draw to get a great deal looking on craigslist or Facebook market place if you have facebook.

How long will it take to spend $5,000 on gas with what she currently has?

Take that into consideration and figure out if it’s even worth getting another vehicle because then you’re out $5k plus filling up the new car with gas too.
If a vehicle got 15mpg, and a gallon of gas was $2.75, you could drive 27,800 miles roughly on that $5,000. 80 miles for 5 days a week for 52 weeks would be 20,800 miles.

I presume in your calculation you are considering mpg she is currently getting and the mpg she "plans" to get. The difference that will count is the added mpg's. If what she drives now gets 15 and the new gas saver gets 25 then you can only claim 10 mpg. Also figure the insurance difference any interest payments or any additional cost. But also, consider maintenance cost - if she currently drives a truck and tires are 1500$ and new car the tires are 750$ - well there are a ton of ways to look at it. Figures lie and liar's figure.

Plus you would save the miles on your other vehicle. And you still have the spare vehicle after that time.

I made the same calcs and decided against once, and regretted it. Because I put 40k on my good car, spent thousands on gas, and ended up with a more broken down nice car, less money in pocket, and no commuter still.

Especially if you're looking at a cheap commuter. It wouldn't pay to buy a brand new car.

It doesn't work quite that way. You have to calc the gallons for each, then figure the savings.
