We cruised to Seward via Celebrity and stayed there a few days and fished....we took ur fish home on the same aircraft we flew out of Anchorage-as luggage. It was a lot more reasonable than shipping the box home Fedex. Hotel rates are obscene and if you really want to hang out in Anchorage for a while, you can call the university there and if it's school break you can rent a room there for around $86.00 per night. We paid $229 for one night at the Hampton in Anchorage.

Two years ago, we did the trip TerryMiller just described, but we went from Fairbanks south. If we were to go back to one location, it would be in the Talkeetna area. Close to Denali, and many other things you mentioned, plus Talkeetna is just a neat little town, with many unique citizens!
Spent a week in and around Talkeetna. Cool little place; at least it was several years ago. From there, you can take a plane to the glacier on Denali, a boat on the river or a train to the end of the line. All worth while. The train was a cool, local experience.

It's getting closer. Have the trip as planned out as I'm going to get it. Excited to get up there and escape this fawking heat !!! Found some cabins to stay in that are super reasonable just south of Denali. Looking forward to shopping at barneys sports chalet and wiggys while we're in anchorage. Going to hit prospectors outdoors in Fairbanks. Anybody have anymore suggestions ?

Thanks but we're going north from anchorage too Denali, then on up to Fairbanks.

We just got back from there two weeks ago. A couple we met on the train between seward and anchorage, Started at Fairbanks, took the train and on occasion a rental car from Fairbanks to Seward with all stops in between. Talkeetna was one of the favorite stops. We heard that more than once from others.
Our next trip there will be on that route. I agree that traveling the Kenai Peninsula can be a full vacation as well.
Wife is going to retire in the next year or so, another trip for an extended period of time will be her gift from me. She loves it there.

If you go toward Denali and can see The mountain, pull over and take a photo because you may not see it due to clouds etc once you get to the park. I forget the actual percentage of folks that actually do see Mt Denali but it's relatively a small number.
If you do go fishing and want to bring your catch home, it can be flash frozen and packed in a styrofoam box and put it on your return flight as luggage and when you arrive home it'll still be frozen and you'll have saved quite a bit of money by doing so in comparison to Fedex rates.
