Opponents argue legalizing concealed weapons will make it easier for criminals to carry them, endangering police. They also worry the bill would lead to more accidental gun discharges by people not adequately trained in firearm safety.
So, criminals currently open carry?

How much gun safety does one learn in a conceal carry class, there wasn't much in mine.

"We wouldn't give people driver's licenses without requiring training or testing. Why would we give people the ability to carry a concealed weapon anywhere?" said Rep. Steve Farley, D-Tucson.
...maybe because it doesn't say in the Constitution that people are only allowed to own guns or carry guns when issued a license.

I think it's great news for gun owners that don't want to open carry.

Man that is some good news. I'd wager that several legislators down there are downright sick and tired of the crap that AZ has to endure as a result of being on the front lines of the Mexican drug wars and they've decided enough is enough. Now if they could just hand the primary victory to JD Hayworth instead of McPain

If you want to follow developments on Arizona's constitutional carry legislation, subscribe to Stephen P. Wenger's free daily defensive use of firearms newsletter. Do that at the bottom link below. Its a great daily read on daily news, and covers Arizona in detail, since that is where its from. Here is today's update on the legislation. If any of you are in AZ and want to support the legislation, this will update you on that, too.

From AzCDL:

SB 1108, the Constitutional Carry bill, has passed the Legislature and will soon be transmitted to the Governor. SB 1108 eliminates the prohibition and penalties for law-abiding adults who carry a concealed weapon without a permit. A letter to the Governor, urging her to sign SB 1108, has been prepared and is waiting for you at AzCDL's Action Center:
http://azcdl.capwiz.com/azcdl/issues/alert/?alertid=14907736

We have been hearing from numerous members that 550 KFYI, the supposedly "conservative" Valley talk radio station, has been running a campaign to ask its listeners to call Governor Brewer's office and ask her to veto the bill. The Barry Young Show and the Mike Broomhead Show have both encouraged listeners to take such action.

We at AzCDL fail to understand how anyone can oppose a bill restoring the fundamental right to bear arms to the citizens of Arizona and still call themselves "conservative". While we certainly support everyone's right to have an opinion, a little ideological consistency would be nice.

We encourage our members to contact KFYI and share your opinions with them. You can reach them by phone at 602-260-5394 or by email at mailto:[email protected] .

We also encourage you to continue to contact Governor Brewer's office and urge her to sign SB 1108. You can use the letter provided above, or you can
call her office at 602-542-4331 or 1-800-253-0883.

Stay tuned! When critical legislation moves, we will notify you via these Alerts.

Firearm safety - It's a matter
for education, not legislation.

The tactics and skills to use a firearm
in self-defense don't come naturally
with the right to keep and bear arms.

To make it clear - the newsletter covers defensive use of firearms everywhere. What he does i pick up reports from all over, give you a summary and a short link. Wenger is an instructor, ex-cop, good writer. I have learned a lot reading his stuff.

The Governor is expected to sign the bill.

AZ will be the third state with constitutional carry.

Interesting thing is that this seems, from the news article, to apply to handguns only. I've not read the text of the proposed statute.

A resident CCW permit in AZ allows carry of any weapon you can carry concealed - switchblade, billy, shotgun, whatever. A CCW also gets you reciprocal rights in more regulated states.

I'm guessing a lot of people will still get the permits.
