I'm not really willing to book a stay or anything, but I might be willing to make a long day of driving for it. What does everyone expect on I40 the day of? I'm kind of envisioning going to ft smith and then angling SE on some smaller road to get to get somewhere within 25 miles of the centerline. Reasonable or not likely to happen? Other option is to stay where I am and experience 92%.
You can stay on I-40 and drive over toward Russellville. Over 4 minutes of totality and no back roads.

Yeah I just didn't know if there would be lots of crowds around Russellville. I can't imagine there would be a problem, but then I hear of hotels booked out a year..

Russellville will likely be over run with visitors, it's been talked about as a top destination for the eclipse for over a year

We'll be leaving Branson the morning of the eclipse and was thinking we'd drive south towards Russellville, try to find somewhere to pull off on a country road and see what we see. I do worry about traffic and keeping the gas tank full

Just remember, if you decide to do any driving in the eclipse area the day of, people are stupid. Be prepared for said persons to come to a complete stop in the middle of an interstate highway at any given time. I ain't foolin' folks. People gonna be acting a fool this day.

Ok, thanks. That is sort of what I was afraid of. I became aware of the eclipse about a month ago, and it's in the 'that would be cool to check out with the kids' camp, but not willing to go to as much effort as some others appear to be willing to..

Right now I think I'll do what I was originally thinking and get to ft smith and randomly head SE and see what happens.
